BOOK REVIEWS NEW Books That I Enjoyed that you might consider reading
I don't read a lot of current Science Fiction, and recommend little of what I read. I much prefer the classic
SF authors like Heinlein, Clarke, etc. However, I received two newly issued books for my birthday that I both enjoyed,
and am happy to recommend. Consider oth of the following:
SLEEPLESS by Charlie Huston
This thriller is set in a postapocalyptic Los Angeles where
a new and at the moment incurable disease renders the victim unable to sleep. After about a year, those with SLP
(as the sleepless illness is known) deteriorate and die. Even before SLP hit, society had begun to break down, and the
disease only added to the city's violence and lawlessness,
Parker Park Haas, an LAPD cop has a newborn daughter and a dying wife and he wonders what future his daughter will
have.
As part of an undercover investigation, Park becomes involved in an online game called Chasm Tide, which many people
have begun to play to escape the terrible current reality. At some point the begine to resembles a role-playing game,
which will interest many yoinger readers. Although I am not one of those, I still felt this was a remarkable
book everyone should consider reading.
IMPACT by Douglas Preston
In another thriller, the U.S. president's science adviser asks former CIA
operative Wyman Ford to look into the sudden appearance of radioactive gemstones.
In particular he wants to know the location of their origin in Cambodia. In another thread, college dropout
astronomer Abbey Straw, searches of small islands near her
New England home to locate pieces of the meteorite to sell on eBay. In California, professor
Jason Freeman sends Mark Corso a classified hard
drive with evidence of gamma rays originating from the Mars, an area of interest to both of them.
The three story lines end up neatly intertwining in interesting ways that build to a drsmstic climax.
Impact had enough real science to satisy the John W Campbell training in me, while meeting the definition
of a thriller. A thought provoking read I highly recommend.
